Novi Connect gets products from raw materials to retailer shelves.

Beauty brands are looking for transparency in their raw materials and packaging, retailers need brands to meet their standards, suppliers and manufacturers are trying to stay on top of regulatory policies, and consumers want products that align with their values. Novi's clean and sustainable beauty platform is the answer.

THE VISION

Novi had successfully built and launched the first version of their web app, and were ready to turn that into a polished, full-featured platform. They initially wanted help building out a feature set for retailers and redesigning the retailer-brand portal. The project grew to include redesigns of other parts of the platform, and Novi continued to sign major retailers, extending work needed on the retailer features and the backend.

WHY LAZER?

Lazer has extensive experience working on ecommerce platforms, and with beauty and healthcare companies such as Fig. 1, Ribbon Health, and Vial. We could quickly create the best platform experience possible, while iterating and adapting as Novi’s needs grew.

Approach

Designing for users across the platform

As we discovered and defined the user needs behind the initial scope (redesigning the retailer-brand portal and building a component library), the project grew to include redesigns of the marketplace, quoting tool, and analytics, as well as explorations around AI-powered search. We also created a design system from scratch.

Our engineering work touched most parts of the platform, including the frontend supplier experience and the revamped checkout flow in the marketplace, but the core of it was the brand-retailer features and vetting engine.

Approach

Creating the retailer-brand portal

We built the brand view to allow them to upload compliance documents, attestations, and ingredients and packaging information. The retailer view included features to define their standards, and review, approve, or reject compliance attestations. 

The retailer-brand portal was an experimental new area Novi was exploring, but as more retailers and brands signed on, it grew to become a major source of their revenue.

Our work was extended to help build for their new onboarding and scaling needs.

Approach

Extending vetting engine functionality

On the backend, the vetting engine evaluates whether a certain product, ingredient, or brand meets certain requirements, and then generates reports on the frontend. For example, the vetting engine can evaluate whether a moisturizer meets a policy on all-natural ingredients. 

Originally it could only vet objects against product formulations, but we extended functionality so it could also vet them against products, packaging, brands, and retailers.

Engine extensions were necessary for the retailer-brand features we built, and we ensured it scaled as retailers were onboarded.
This became a long-term engagement with Novi Connect, and it was rewarding to build new features and drive innovation across their platform.

With their success signing major retailers, the core features we worked on became an unexpected and integral revenue stream. It’s extremely gratifying for us to have been a part of this growth, and we look forward to seeing what’s next for Novi.
