OVO has grown into a global portfolio of brands across fashion, music, and more.

Based in Toronto, October’s Very Own (OVO) began as a clothing brand founded by Aubrey “Drake” Graham, Oliver El-Khatib, and Noah “40” Shebib in 2011, followed by their independent record label OVO Sound. From early collaborations with Roots Canada and the Toronto Raptors, it has evolved into a globally successful lifestyle brand with brick-and-mortar stores in Canada, the US, and the UK.

THE VISION

OVO needed a strong Shopify setup to allow them to build and launch new initiatives with ease. They were interested in an audit and improvements to their codebase, storefront, and NetSuite.

WHY LAZER?

Our experience building on Shopify meant we could dive into OVO’s setup and offer meaningful recommendations for strengthening their codebase and storefront. We were ready to make these improvements quickly and effectively, enabling them to move ahead with their plans for the brand.

Approach

Meticulous codebase audit

To start, we dove into OVO’s codebase to understand how everything was built and connected.

Mapping out their infrastructure, including their Shopify apps and custom apps, helped us identify issues and provide analysis on how they could clean up the codebase, their Shopify store, and their Hydrogen framework. This would set them up to more smoothly build and launch new initiatives. We also audited their NetSuite implementation.

Approach

Taking the time to clean up

The more tech debt and users a codebase accumulates, the harder it is to clean up. Letting us own their codebase and make improvements was a significant investment into OVO’s future.

We utilized Remix best practices to clean up their code and make sure everything was working without errors.

Properly typing out the codebase using Typescript best practices and commenting throughout helped make it easy to understand, more efficient and organized, and more secure.

Approach

Performance and analytics

We helped OVO migrate their storefront from Shopify Checkout Liquid to Checkout 2.0, including pixels, UI extensions, and functions, and improved their Hydrogen setup.

Through the migration, we ensured their accessibility compliance, SEO scores, and performance page load speed were high.

We resolved some discrepancies in their analytics, improving their data quality, and handling Facebook analytics such as Pixel. Another focus was fixing their NetSuite synchronization processes, including Celigo middleware processing.

Approach

Support and improvements

By helping clean up the UI in the OVO storefront, we simplified the design so users can navigate it better.

We also improved their Contentful integration, cleaning up queries for an improved content management experience.

It was important to us that we were super responsive and available to the OVO team for any issues that came up, helping them navigate our improvements and providing post-project support.

The OVO team was impressed with our audit, delivery, and support — and our work will play a key role in driving their future plans.

It’s rewarding to help a client like OVO figure out how to reach their next level. Going deep with the code audit and cleanup was a satisfying challenge, and we were proud to provide quality site work and hit all the top performance metrics in the process.

We’re now leading development efforts at OVO and are honoured to keep working with them as they continue to build their legacy.
